About Our Trainers

Why Do You Require Your Dog Trainers Be Certified through the CCPDT or IAABC?

We require our dog trainers to be certified through the CCPDT or IAABC because certified dog trainers stay current with advances in canine behavior and use evidence-based, humane training methods that prioritize each dog’s physical and emotional well-being. Rather than relying on force, fear, or punishment, our trainers work to understand the reasons behind a dog’s behavior and teach more appropriate responses. Whether helping a fearful or reactive dog feel safer or giving a puppy the foundation to grow into a confident adult, our goal is to create lasting positive change while strengthening communication between dogs and their families.

Our many Google, Facebook, and Yelp reviews are a wonderful way to learn about our dog training offerings and what Northern Fairfield County dog parents are saying about our trainers.

Dog Training Expectations

May I observe a class before committing to training?

We encourage prospective clients to observe a class in progress. Please contact us to schedule your visit.

For group classes and private lessons, you or another designated adult will work directly with your dog under the guidance of our professional dog trainers. With Puppy Day Camp, our trainers do the hands-on training for you. Simply drop off your dog, and we’ll work with them throughout their day or stay before you pick them up at the scheduled time.

We encourage the whole family to be involved in your dog’s training. Children who are old enough to participate are welcome to join in, while younger children attending class should be able to remain calm and comfortable throughout the session. To help maintain a safe, positive learning environment for everyone, children may not run, climb, or play on training equipment, yell, or approach unfamiliar dogs.

We do our best to keep trainers consistent by assigning them to a specific class schedule each week. That said, you may work with a substitute trainer if needed due to time off, illness, or other absences.

We encourage puppies to start training after they receive their second distemper/parvo vaccine. Starting at this time will optimize their learning because it falls in line with key stages of socialization. For more on this subject, please read the Puppy Socialization Statement by the American Veterinary Society of Animal Behavior.

Health & Safety

What Are Your Health Requirements?

To ensure the safety of all people and pets in our care, we have the following health requirements, which apply to all our training options.

  • PUPPIES (under 5 months old) must have received two distemper/parvo vaccines before first class, at least one administered by a veterinarian.
  • ADULT DOGS (5 months and older) must have current rabies and distemper/parvo vaccinations or have proof of titers within the last year.
  • All dogs, regardless of age, must have resided in your home and be free from illness for the two weeks before the start of class.
  • Dogs that have been ill during the week should not attend class. Pet Parents are encouraged to attend so that you can learn and practice at home.
  • When in doubt, please contact us before scheduling or driving to our facility.

If your dog displays aggression or reactivity, a private lesson is required so one of our trainers can evaluate your dog and recommend an appropriate training plan. All dogs exhibiting aggressive or reactive behavior must complete our Reactive Dog class before participating in basic obedience, dog sports, or drop-in classes. Your trainer will assess your dog’s progress and determine when they are ready to safely participate in other classes.

Cancellations and Refunds

What Is Your Cancellation Policy?

Our cancellation policy applies as follows:

  • Group Classes
    • Must have a minimum of 3 dogs enrolled. We will contact you at least 24 hours before the start of your selected class if our enrollment minimum is not met.
    • Must be cancelled at least 7 days before the start of class to receive a refund or credit to your account. Refunds incur a 10% fee. No credits or refunds will be issued once the first class of the series has begun.
    • Because group classes will continue even if you are not present, we do not offer make-up lessons. If your dog cannot attend due to illness or injury, we encourage you to come to class to learn the skills and teach them at home once your dog has recovered.
  • Puppy Day Camp & Private Lessons
    • Must be cancelled with 24 hours’ notice to receive a credit. Cancellations with less than 24 hours’ notice are charged in full.
